A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY
The acquisition of the Saint-Irénée church by Domaine Forget de Charlevoix is a truly promising project. Giving a second life to this heritage building will have many benefits such as providing additional teaching space for its internationally-acclaimed Academy, revitalizing the local cultural scene and providing an inspiring space to unleash artistic and creative spirit!
In 2018, the Domaine Forget International music and dance Academy faced a familiar challenge: once again, teaching space was running out due to ever-increasing student attendance. Coincidentally, the St. Laurent de Charlevoix Parish Council was investigating the possibility of transferring, closing or selling some of its church buildings, including the church in St. Irénée due to declining attendance and increasing maintenance costs.
The Parish Council approached Domaine Forget and offered the cultural institution to purchase the church on certain conditions, the main one being to maintain a space a worship and church services for the local population. Domaine Forget saw an opportunity for not only to add more classrooms and work areas for its students and faculty, but also to help preserve a part of the community’s heritage and source of pride. With the pandemic slowing down negotiations, the deal was officialised in May of 2021. A win-win solution for both Domaine Forget and the St-Irénée community!
Conservation of the Parish’s heritage and place of worship
Creation of a community centre
Additional classrooms and workspaces for the Domaine Forget International music and dance Academy
Will also be used as a concert venue for the International Festival
In order for it to fully meet its new artistic vocation, this exceptional building requires major renovations.
During the renovations, religious services will be held in the Municipal hall. Domaine Forget sincerely thanks the Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec, the Fondation J.A. DeSève, the Municipality of St. Irénée, the Parish Council and the parishioner for their precious collaboration.
